Anyone interested in or concerned about the impact of tourism on society, particularly in the developing world, should read this book. It explores a subject that, of interest to academics over the last decade, has long remained ignored, almost a taboo area for many governments, institutions, and organizations. The book demonstrates that the stereotyping of 'sex tourism' is too simple, and that it has many manifestations, not all of them positive. The book follows its theme in an innovative and original way. This is due to the range of contributors and the nature of the contributions, which include the personal and anecdotal to highly structured and well-referenced chapters. The book succeeds in highlighting some of the social and economic implications arising from the growth of international travel. Many of the examples given are disturbing, but they will not go away and, unless tackled, may intensify. Sex and Tourism explores an aspect of tourism that is of growing concern to many countries. It provides a platform for further research and should be of interest to scholars of tourism and those in other areas of social studies |
