| Summary |
Three seemingly separate events in Aotearoa-New Zealand are merged into a study about the uptake, consequences, and challenges to a form of neoliberalism that has influenced the trajectory of global development for more than three decades: (a) a leak in the fuel pipeline that transports oil to a major airport and that affected many travel-related businesses, travellers, and those impacted by schedule changes; (b) the announcement by the Deputy Leader of the Opposition of her successful by-pass surgery; and (c) the recanting of neoliberal ideology, first by a former Prime Minister who during the 1990s oversaw its implementation, followed by the current Prime Minister who promises to remedy the social and environmental damage assumed to be the outcome of this ideology. The opening story is about governmental response to media exposure of the oil leak. The two following stories invite a view of the pipeline leak as a material metaphor for significant degradations in the social and environmental spheres under the neoliberal regime that directed this small but globally active jurisdiction--that is, Aotearoa-New Zealand--for more than thirty years. The case study as a whole provides real situations through which several abstract concepts, drawn from critical organizational studies, may be made pertinent to students. Regardless if neoliberals are able to retrieve the control of power, the conditions of doing business, the governance and management of commercial and state services and the wellbeing of communities and households will be affected. The case invites students to consider how far citizens can impact the trajectory of globalisation that will inevitably affect human beings the world over and our relationship with planet Earth |
