During his lifetime (1859-1952), he was regarded by poll after poll as one of the ten most important thinkers in American history. His philosophy, Pragmatism, has been the distinctive American philosophy during the last fifty years. His work on education is famous worldwide and is still influential today. Dewey rejected old-fashioned schooling and believed in multiculturalism and independent thinking. His University of Chicago Laboratory School (founded in 1896), still thrives today and is a model for schools all over the world.
