*Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are advised that the following program contains images and voices of people who have died*150 years ago when the nation was still forming its identity, Australia gained a small but vital Muslim population when camels were proposed as the best way to explore and service the outback. In 1866, the first large shipment of camels arrived in Port Augusta accompanied by 31 camel handlers. This was the beginning of a great adventure for these men and those that followed them. Their lives were full of hardship, unpredictability, segregation and alienation. Despite this some stayed and went on to marry and have families.The cameleers contributed greatly to the building of this nation; in outback exploration, in construction and carting goods across the dry interior. Several well known cameleers also made their mark on Australian history; Bejah Dervish the great explorer, Noore Mahomet who was shot dead by a white teamster while washing in a waterhole and Jack Akbar who fell in love with and married Lallie an Aboriginal girl.Most traces of these cameleers have vanished today. Only in the memories of their descendants and in local histories of outback towns has their heritage remained. Here mosques still stand in some of the places where they lived, and artefacts are proudly displayed in descendants' houses or hidden away as treasured keepsakes.By Compass And Quran retraces the steps of the early Afghan cameleers and explores the extraordinary lives of some of these men and how their legacy lives on.
