Summary This special issue of Trends in Automotive Research contains papers contributed to the Regional Conference on Automotive Research (ReCAR), held on the 14 and 15th December, 2011, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The conference was organised by the Centre for Automotive Research (CAR), Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Abdullah (U. Kebangsaan, Malaysia) compiles 66 papers from the Regional Conference on Automotive Research (ReCAR 2011), held in December 2011 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The conference focused on the theme "Inspiring Ideas and Nurturing Innovation in Automotive Research," and engineering professionals, academics, and researchers from southeast Asia, Asia, Iran, Sudan, Canada, Germany, and Australia present new developments, research results, and future perspectives on automotive engineering and related issues. Coverage encompasses materials characterization; computational and experimental mechanics; advanced manufacturing in automotive industries; signal processing and automotive electronics; mathematical modeling and optimization; noise, vibration, and harshness; fuel and combustion; vehicle dynamics and mechatronics; automotive design, comfort, and ergonomics; green technology, safety, comfort, and ergonomics; and other topics
