Summary Modern art 1. This program looks at three different forms of modern art: pop, expressionism and the fauves. The aim of the program is to understand the styles of the different era's and to understand what influenced these artists. The program examines works of artists of the period. Part 2. Expressionism: This program addresses the charactersitics of Expressionism. The program looks at the works of Munch, Kadinsky, Jalensky, Kirchner, Marc and Beckmann, all Northern artists. Viewers will be able to distinguish the individual styles of each artist. Cubism: This program looks at what determines a Cubism style through the works of Cezanne and Picasso. The program also addresses abstract and baroque painting styles through Delaunay, Leger, Duchamp and Modriaan. Part 3. Surrealism: The paintings of Rousseau show the beginnings of fantasy, and other characteristics in Surrealist paintings. Through the works of the Spaniards Dali and Miro, Magritte, de Chirico and Chagall, Surrealism developed original vocabularies of imagery. Modern mavericks: The works of six modern mavericks reflect and influenced the styles of artists to follow. This program looks at the styles of these six independent artists Klimt, Klee, Roult, Modigiali, Balia and Kokoschka. Part 4. American landscapes: Examples of how Cubism influenced Stella's vertical abstract paintings; Precisionists Demuth and Sheeler; the more organic landscape of O'Keefe and Dove, and Marin's expressionistic images. Realism: Features Hopper's stark, brooding inner city paintings, Shahn's artistic commentary, Levine's social satires, Pippin's striking interiors, and Avery's unique abstract landscapes. The works of Wyeth, Wood and Hart Benton - a new regional realism. Part 5. Abstract expressionism: The bold gestural paintings of Kline, de Kooning and Gottlieb; Pollock's technique of spattering and dribbling. The works of Rothko, Frankenthaler and Louis. The precise canvases of Frank Stella and reaction to the emotional outbursts of Abstract Expressionism. Pop: This program addresses Pop's spirit and typical subject matter through Lichtenstein's comic book images, Warhol's famous faces, Rosenquist's day-glo canvasses, Thiebaud's paintings of cakes and pies, Oldenburgh's burger sculptures and Indiana's work with letters, words, numbers and signs
