Summary |
1997 was a year of justice, mourning and technology. The death of Jacques Cousteau was overshadowed, however, by the tragic demise on August 31, of the Princess of Wales in a car accident in Paris. Shortly after, the passing of Mother Teresa provoked an outpouring of tributes, from a world still reeling from Princess Diana's sudden death. Justice was served when Carlos the Jackal faced trial for the murder of two French secret agents and a Lebanese informer. Gary Kasparov challenged and lost a game of chess to IBM Supercomputer, Deep Blue, the first time a computer had ever defeated a human in match play |
