Summary Take a behind-the-scenes journey into the intriguing work of one of Australia's most important living artists, Janet Laurence. Eight years in the making, this film follows Janet as she produces major installation artworks that have become part of our cities' landscapes.Providing a rare insight into her creative process, Janet explains the themes, materials and inspiration behind some of her major artworks including; Edge of the Trees (with Fiona Foley), Museum of Sydney; 49 Veils, the award-winning windows at Bondi's Central Synagogue; In the Shadow Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Homebush Bay; The Australian War Memorial (with Tonkin Zulaikha Greer architects) in London's Hyde Park and her most recent work Waterveil, CH2 building, commissioned by Melbourne City Council. With a fervent passion for the natural world, Janet uses elements of the environment to show us the hidden beauty and dangerous fragility of both the natural and cultural worlds. Janet's studio resembles an artist's laboratory. Working like a modern day alchemist, she experiments with a range of materials, transforming matter from the mundane to the mysterious, creating 'experimental spaces' for the public to admire and enter into.Additional interviews with key people who position her work, socially, culturally and historically, also expose the challenges faced by an independent artist making 'experimental artworks'.PRODUCTION DETAILS:Produced and directed by Richard Mordaunt. ABC TV commissioning editor Megan Harding
