Summary This handbook is a distillation of the most important concepts presented in the textbook Cardiac Intensive Care , now in its third edition. It was compiled by two co-authors who are at opposite ends of the career spectrum. Hopefully, that combination of vitality and experience results in a unique contribution to the cardiology literature. Our goal was to create a portable, easy-to-read, pocket-sized compendium of cardiac intensive care medicine that could be quickly referenced while in the midst of caring for these very ill patients. Our hope is that this handbook will translate into better understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of patients with severe cardiac diseases by learners at all levels and, most importantly, improved outcomes for patients
