Tonight Jennifer and guests explore the world of animals in books. From the furry friends of childhood with their joyful ways - and sometimes improving morals - to the four-legged metaphors which roam unchecked and untamed through adult literature. What is it about animals that manages to grab such a firm grip on our hearts and minds and never lets go?Guests featured on the program:Peter Goldsworthy is a poet, librettist and novelist, the author of books including Maestro, Honk if You're Jesus, Three Dog Night and Wish - the story of the intimate relationship between a highly intelligent gorilla and the man who teaches her sign language. Jackie French is one of Australia's most popular authors for children and young adults and the winner of bucketloads of prizes from right around the world. She has written far too many books to count including her latest How High Can a Kangaroo Hop?, Pete the Sheep, The Goat Who Sailed the World and the sublime Diary of a Wombat. Raimond Gaita is a professor of philosophy at King's College, London and the Australian Catholic University and the author of the acclaimed memoir Romulus, My Father. He has also achieved the uncommon feat of bringing together memoir, philosophy and love of animals in The Philosopher's Dog. Sonya Hartnett has recently returned from Sweden where she received the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, the world's leading prize for Children's and Youth Literature.
