Summary This work introduces readers to simple regression. This technique allows researchers to evaluate whether a continuous dependent variable is a linear function of a single independent variable. The simple linear regression model is most commonly estimated via ordinary least squares (OLS), and is sometimes called OLS regression. This example uses a subset of data from the 2006 China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) of adults. It presents an analysis of whether systolic blood pressure is a linear function of a person's weight. In other words, it examines whether weight is a predictor of someone's systolic blood pressure. High blood pressure is associated with a number of negative health outcomes. Thus results from an analysis like this could have implications for individual behaviour and public health policy
