It also launches a campaign around seafood labelling that will enable all Australians to make better choices when it comes to buying and consuming seafood. When Matthew Evans leaves his Tasmanian farm to discover where the fish on Australian plates comes from, he's quickly dragged hook, line and sinker into the complex world of Australia's love affair with seafood. Matthew's physical journey takes him from the industrial salmon farms of Tasmania, to the catastrophic trawling of Asian seas to feed Aussie's love of cheap prawns; from the depths of Australia's threatened Great Barrier Reef, to the lucrative ranching of critically endangered species in South Australia.Matthew's discoveries provoke him to ask some tough questions of both the Australian fishing industry and of himself. When it comes to seafood, Australians simply aren't being told enough about what they are eating. Fish labelling in Australia is at best crude, at worst deliberately deceptive. Matthew embarks on a campaign for truth in fish labelling. His goal is for all Australian seafood - fresh, cooked or preserved - to carry labels that tell consumers clearly what species it is, where it is from and how it was caught or farmed. Here in the Lucky Country most assume that the seafood they buy and consume is all sustainably fished in Australia's own crystal clear waters. But the reality is far more complicated. Not everyone knows that when we order flake and chips, we are actually eating shark. The problem is no one knows what species it is, so we could be eating an endangered species on a Friday night without knowing it. Matthew decides that until we get better seafood labelling we should swap out flake for other more sustainable alternatives.
