Summary "This book is a follow-up of an earlier collection of conference papers under the title New Universities and Regional Context, edited by the same team (1994). This time the focus is on a selection of case-studies from four countries that share a lot of contextual conditions basic for the operation of higher education. In three of these, Norway, Sweden and Scotland, several non-metropolitan medium-sized colleges find themselves in an expansion phase and are also building up research facilities especially in niche areas of both regional importance and international significance. Nine such cases are presented, one from Scotland, four from Norway and four from Sweden. The comparisons also include three cases from Australia, where a recent reform of the national resource allocation scheme has led to a series of amalgamations of the former Colleges of Advanced Education into the university system. One such merger has already been broken up into two new structures, while the two other examples represent two different kinds of networks between campuses. The case-reports and the summary chapters emphasize the importance of both external demographic conditions and industrial relations as well as firm and consistent management strategies."--Abstract
