Summary Explores the intricate web of lies spun by writer Norma Khouri in the award-winning Australian documentary Forbidden Lie$. Norma Khouri is the author of the 2001 international best-selling "memoir", Forbidden Love, which detailed the ritual "honour killing" of her Muslim best friend Dalia, in Amman, Jordan. With a vision of achieving international awareness, Khouri's central motive was to put pressure on the Jordanian Government to abolish existing laws. She sought to break the code of silence surrounding honour killings and force the truth to be revealed. Khouri's story brought her fame and fortune and was a runaway bestseller. Translated into multiple languages, published in 15 countries, and with approximately 500,000 copies sold world-wide, Khouri achieved rock star status in the literary world. This was until she came under the scrutiny of esteemed Sydney Morning Herald journalist Malcolm Knox who exposed her book as a work of fiction, revealing Norma's true identity and uncovering her as a hoax author. Knox's research revealed a series of intriguing details; though born in Jordan, Khouri spent a majority of her childhood in Chicago; she presented herself as a single woman albeit she was married with two children, and although Dalia may have possibly existed, there is no concrete evidence that the killing had actually occurred...and this is just the tip of the iceberg! After some time in hiding, Khouri finally speaks out in Anna Broinowski's gripping film, which weaves Khouri's tales amid probing interviews from; various media, FBI experts, doctors in Jordan, women's rights activists, her family (including her estranged husband), her neighbour and her publishers. This real-life thriller explores whether her memoir Forbidden Love is fact or fiction.
