Summary In this episode, Insight looks at how the faraway war in Syria is hitting close to home. Syria has been embroiled in civil war since rebels staged an armed uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's rule 18 months ago. A recent spate of assaults on Syrian military and government installations has sparked some of the fiercest fighting yet between rebels and the army, in a conflict that activists say has killed more than 32,000 people. As the conflict worsens in Syria, tension is simmering in Australia. Traditional divides are being played out locally and Syrian Australians are worried about the rise of sectarianism in their communities. A number of Syrian Australian supporters of the Assad regime say they're being intimidated into silence. There have also been reports of attacks on religious minority groups here. Insight looks at the tensions brewing in Australia's Syrian community as violence escalates back in their home country. Insight is hosted by Gold Walkley Award-winning journalist Jenny Brockie. The discussion continues online each week at sbs.com.au/insight, and on Twitter #insightSBS
