Summary Once upon a time a beautiful young noblewoman was murdered by her stepmother, smooth-talking men swarmed into overcrowded towns in search of youths to colonise distant lands and rare Celtic gold coins found in fields and forests promised their finders wealth and happiness. As different as they are, these occurrences all have one thing in common - they gave rise to some of the most beloved fairy tales in the world. Snow White, The Pied Piper Of Hamelin and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow are folk tales passed on from generation to generation. Yet they are also stories based on actual events. In this three-part documentary, pioneers of a new discipline, the 'archaeology of the folk tale', set out to track down the events that engendered these beloved tales. Part two travels to Hamelin in Lower Saxony to discover whether overpopulation, lack of hygiene, plagues and mass migration were the reasons behind the legendary exodus reflected in the quaint children's story, The Pied Piper Of Hamelin. Who was the Pied Piper, and did he really seduce those children into marching to their deaths? (From Germany, in German, English subtitles) (Part 2)
