Summary |
Economist and Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz gave an address on 'the price of inequality' and managed to pack out the Sydney Town Hall.Perhaps it is because he makes economic theory so accessible. He doesn't dumb down complicated theories or manipulate statistics to suit his theories. Instead he uses easily available data to make his case about inequality, such as sharing that the "top 1% [of people in the US] get almost a quarter of all the income."His big message for Australia is to not go down the US route, particularly in terms of health and education, "as things aren't quite as bad in Australia, but they're not far behind."The audience is perhaps an indicator of how eager some people are for economic information and alternatives. Sure, these viewers are very well disposed towards Stiglitz, but ultimately they are people who are uneasy about the current economic and political policies, both in Australia and on a global scale |
