Summary The Women and Depression Task Force addressed the nature of depressions among women. /// The report is divided into three major parts, covering risk factors, treatment issues, and depression in specific female populations. In Section I, the Task Force identified at least six areas as possible contributors to women's greater risk for depression, examining the literature with respect to reproductive events, personality and other psychological factors, family roles and intimate relationships, work roles, victimization, and poverty. Section II discusses diagnostic and treatment issues for depressed women. A chart is provided to present an overview of the treatment research on women and depression; updated information on antidepressants, including gender differences, are described; and specifics of interpersonal therapy, feminist therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy are discussed in some detail. Section III describes the needs, experiences, and treatment issues of specific subgroups of women at risk for depression, such as ethnic minority women, adolescents, professional women, lesbians, older women, substance abusers, women with eating disorders, poor women, and physically abused women.
