Summary |
We now have a test for what it means to be truly Australian. The citizenship test was passed in the Senate last week. The Federal Government is biting the bullet by insisting that incoming migrants will have to abandon those values that don't fit with mainstream Australia. Hence, the need to pass the citizenship test before being granted entry. Generations of migrant families have struggled with what it means to be Australian and balancing this with not relinquishing all aspects of their own cultures. These are the cultures that have transformed Australia into a vibrant and varied ethnic mix. But cross cultural battles have been played out on a daily basis within families since the inception of our huge migrant intake. Insight brings together different generations of migrant families, husbands and wives, parents and children who talk very frankly about what it means when cultures collide within families and within the broader Australian community |
