Summary |
"The use of stimulant medication to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Australia has more than doubled in the past decade. The rising numbers have lead health professionals, politicians and parents to question the legitimacy of the diagnosis. Despite the debate more and more Australians are being treated for ADHD, particularly adults and girls. Whilst some doctors have expressed concern over the use of stimulant medication to treat the condition, others suffering from ADHD maintain that without it they would not function. This year two long lasting ADHD medications will be added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. One of them, Straterra, caries a black box warning and has caused suicidal thoughts and tendencies in some users. INSIGHT brings together doctors, academics and parents, as well as children and adults suffering from ADHD to discuss whether the condition is being over diagnosed and how best to treat it."--website |
