Tonight Insight is coming to you from Deer Park, about 20 minutes west of Melbourne's CBD, and we're at a local shopping centre because it's some of the choices people are making here that could end up killing them. This area in Melbourne, Brimbank, has one of the highest rates of type II diabetes in the country. In fact, in the past five years, the rate of the deadly disease here has doubled. You aren't born with type II diabetes, it's lifestyle-related and you can avoid it. But more than 1,000 Australians are now being diagnosed with type II diabetes each week. Health professionals say it's an epidemic - a disease once mostly seen in people over 50 is now increasingly showing up in kids and young adults.--Website |
