Summary |
"The End of Marriage? Are we seeing the end of marriage? In the past 20 years the number of people getting married in Australian has dropped by almost a quarter, while de facto relationships have risen dramatically. Insight host Jenny Brockie asks whether the institution of marriage is in slow, but inevitable, decline. With a new bill being debated in Federal Parliament that's designed to give de facto couples the same legal and economic rights as married ones, will more Australians be entering a new form of marriage without realising it? Or is living together still seen as an important trial period before the big step? In this intriguing episode of Insight, Jenny Brockie asks why are we no longer getting married? Is it because we are scared of divorce or because marriage has become a devalued or archaic institution?"--SBS website |
