Summary |
'Is it medicine's new frontier --- or scientists selling false hope? That's the question our politicians will soon have to answer. Therapeutic cloning of human embryos to produce embryonic stem cells is a contentious new science. It's banned in Australia. But many scientists want the ban lifted. They say this technique could unlock the mysteries of disease. It might also provide therapies for incurable medical problems, like Diabetes, Parkinsons, and spinal cord injuries. But, on the other side of the debate, there are those equally determined the ban must stay. Federal Health Minister, Tony Abbott, argues it's dangerous to allow any kind of cloning. And unethical too, as it involves creating human embryos for scientific research. He's got the support of influential Christian leaders. Before long, there's going to be a showdown in Canberra. Our politicians have been given a rare conscience vote. No one knows which way it will go. Science, ethics and religion are on a collision course again'. --Website |
