Summary The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study collected data from over 17,000 patients and documented that adverse childhood experiences are unexpectedly common in the general population, have a profound effect on adult health and well-being half a century later, and are a prime determinant of adult health status in the United States. Recommends that all patients should be screened for adverse childhood experiences, and that a trauma history may be relevant in treatment of both serious illness and vague somatic complaints
