Summary Increasing diversity within the world challenges nurses to become more sensitive to providing culturally sensitive care to cultural and ethnic groups. Research allows the direct gain of information that can transform practice. Because of the diaspora of the Somali people, there is a large immigrant Somali population in the United States, particularly in Minnesota. The social support of extended family, typical in Somalia, is usually absent for the immigrant new mother. There is a need for nurses to understand and to provide for the special needs of this community, specifically new mothers during the childbirth experience. This case describes a qualitative study of Somali immigrant new mothers experience of childbirth in Minnesota. Semi-structured interviews with 12 new Somali immigrant mothers were conducted. Access to the cultural group was gained through a trusted relationship with a community leader. Snowball sampling and data collection continued until saturation occurred. Data analysis provided the following themes: the limitations of support due to separation from family, the importance of cultural and religious beliefs and practices, the desired relationships with nurses, the fear of cesarean section, the value of education for Somali women, and views on postpartum blues/depression. Trustworthiness was established throughout and included research triangulation and member checks
