Summary |
Geelong has a rich and diverse jazz musical history which commenced in the early 1920's and continued throughout the subsequent decades; it is a history not previously documented. Ian Coots discovered jazz as a seventeen year old in the 1960's when he began attending and running jazz dances and festivals. He collected anything jazz related, such as photos, tickets, posters, programs, newspaper cuttings and the like; his friend Roger Beilby did the same. However, Ian's collecting came to an abrupt halt when he commenced playing music as a drummer and vocalist, whilst Roger continued to amass a comprehensive collection. In early 2020 Ian succumbed to Roger's persistence to document their collective memorabilia which, coupled with Ian's experience as a jazz musician, provided ample material to bring this book to fruition. "A Comprehensive Pictorial History of Jazz in Geelong" is the culmination of information gleaned from the above, plus an extensive variety of additional sources, including interviews with local musicians and their relatives. It includes almost 800 photos and scans of jazz related items from the collections of numerous musicians and their families. Many of the photos, and stories behind them, have not been seen or heard before. This has resulted in a historical compilation which ideally could become a part of the collection of anyone interested in Geelong and its colourful jazz past |
