June Cross is a tenured professor of Journalism at Columbia University, the author of "Secret Daughter : A Mixed-Race Daughter and The Mother Who Gave Her Away." Her story of social and racial pressures raises questions, not only about race but about the nature of blended families. In the end however, a real humanity emerged from the racial turmoil. Rising above race is a challenge that every American family faces
