Summary |
This program is a four-part series that attempts to meld historical inquiry with period re-enactments to transport the viewer back to this turbulent and exciting time. This time was deemed, by most accounts, to have been a dark and fear-inducing period in history, yet it was also the dawn of the modern era. Interviews with historians and the dramatisation of a medieval monk's pilgrimage are used to give viewers an understanding of the age of monasticism, pilgrimage and heresy. In this era, modern science and mathematics were developing primarily in the monasteries, as they were the centres of knowledge at this time, like the translation schools at Toledo, where Christian, Jewish and Muslim scholars all worked together. This episode focuses on Edward, a young Scottish monk with an interest in science. Through Edward's adventures, we experience a medieval pilgrimage and discover the first tourist guidebook, the Codex Calixtinus. (From Germany, in German, English subtitles) (Part 2) |
