Summary |
The hero of this story of Australian pioneering days began life as a poor boy on an Irish farm. He dreamed and planned how one day he would make a better life for his family. When he was 17 he found himself at last, with his parents, five sisters and younger brother, on board a migrant ship bound for New South Wales. How his life unfolded from that time is a most exciting story. Fortune favoured him when, in 1851, he made his first £1,000 on the Victorian goldfields, but his success was really due to his decision to abandon the goldfields and build up a pastoral empire in a remote wilderness. Patsy Durack opened up thousands of square miles of then unknown country, and started great herds of cattle and horses on an epic 3,000 mile overland drive. The man whose childhood ambition had been to ride and own a fine horse became a horse breeder of renown and could take his pick of the best mounts in the land. For all this, Patsy Durack, whose story encompasses a vast panorama of colonial history, and covers the entire map of Australia, never lost the gentle and generous spirit that was the driving force of his life. -- Dust jacket |
