Summary |
The present case study underlines the importance of adaptation to face the challenges posed by the globalization of competition in the contract manufacturing sector in the United Kingdom (UK). The case study describes how the Tharsus Group - a British Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) located in the northeast of the United Kingdom - has overcome the challenges posed by globalization by migrating from a traditional contract manufacturing model to an advanced service provider, namely Original Equipment Design and Manufacturing (OEDM). This strategic move has helped this company not only to save its business in a turbulent environment but also to create a sustainable competitive advantage. This case study shows how manufacturing companies are implementing the concept of servitization in order to streamline their supply chain and to enhance the value of their offer. It also emphasizes the importance of collaborative product development, which the Tharsus Group has implemented with its client firms. Finally, the case study discusses the results achieved by the Tharsus Group following this strategic change. The case study is interesting for manufacturing firms that are located in developed countries; though an open question still needs further exploration: is the OEDM a sustainable model over the long term? |
