Summary In 1970, a group of women filed a complaint against the University of Michigan that helped transform employment practices that discriminated against women at colleges and universities across the United States. The women were more successful than their peers at other schools because their determined leaders were beyond the reach of the system they were challenging; because they were supported by sympathetic government bureaucrats and rapidly developing women's support networks; and because the initial response of the University's mostly male administrators was so unsympathetic
