Summary This introductory primer is intended to facilitate the first stages of learning Hittite, encompassing basic information necessary to understand the intricacies of writing, transliteration and reconstuction (textual and archaeological) and interpretation of different types of texts, together with intertextual grammatical glosses, concise notes on the grammar, lists of akkadograms and sumerograms for each text, glossary with etymological notes for numerous entries to help the reader grasp also the diachronic and comparative dimension of Hittite within the Indo-European family. The selected texts are diverse both chronologically (from Old Hittite, Middle Hittite and New Hittite) and thematically (a historical record, a myth, a letter, an inventory text, a legal text). All texts are also available as autographs or photographs to make the orientation in the actual artefact easier but also to appreciate the state of damage and overall difficulty of interpreting texts with many lacunas, often incomplete. This short reader should make Hittite accessible to a beginner but also to specialists from other linguistic fields who seek to enrich their experience with old languages. Students of Indo-European linguistics will benefit from its referrence to the other branches of this linguistic family. Czech readers have in this book for the first time a reader of a language deciphered by their compatriot, Bedřich Hrozný
