Summary Inspired by the 1927 Upton Sinclair novel, Oil!, There Will Be Blood chronicles the rise of rugged prospector, Daniel Plainview, in a sprawling epic about family, greed, corruption, religion, and the pursuit of the American dream. After receiving a tip from a stranger about an oil-rich community, Daniel embarks with his adopted son, H.W., on a "quail-hunting" expedition to inspect the small town called Little Boston and see for himself. When the rumor proves to be true, he establishes himself in the small town, purchasing the Sunday ranch as his home base, and begins to drill. But trouble starts to plague the new dig, which local preacher, Eli Sunday, believes is a direct result of Daniel's refusal to let him bless the project.
