Summary This week Enough Rope goes 'On the Road' to the north-west Victorian town of Rainbow (population about 550), which lies in wheat and sheep country on the edge of the Mallee (desert country).Scratch the surface and even a small town like Rainbow reveals a cast of characters.Val Dickson is an elderly widow and the local hairdresser, a woman with a big heart and a great sense of fun - in fact she's also the local graffiti artist. Val and her husband came here 52 years ago, and went on to have four children, one of whom, Billy, is intellectually disabled. Ron Ismay runs the local hardware shop and is a fourth generation Rainbow resident. Tragedy struck when Ron was in his teens, and even all these years later, he still struggles to come to terms with it. Ron has a dream of restoring Rainbow's wheat silos to their former glory, back when the town had a population of 2,000. Marg Krelle is Victoria's only female dog-trapper - but don't let that fool you - Marg has a few other tricks up her sleeve! She and her late father used to go duck shooting, and even though it's clear she misses the outdoor exploits they used to enjoy, she is just happy and proud to be able to carry on what her dad started. 28 year-old Adam Gould (Potsy) is one of the local lads. He plays for the local football team and sells farm machinery. He's happy with his life - he's back after a stint elsewhere, but wouldn't mind if a few city girls paid them a visit every now and then. And then there's 18 year-old Rebecca McLean - the current 'Miss Rainbow'. Her older sister's living in Melbourne and has become quite the 'city girl', but even the move to Bendigo next year to train as a teacher is a little daunting for Rebecca. She'll miss her friends, her mum's cooking, and her teachers. PRODUCTION DETAILS:ENOUGH ROPE with Andrew Denton is an ABC TV and Zapruder's Other Films co-production.
