Summary |
People of all ages think about their own life experiences and sometimes share those reminiscences with others. This case focuses on the evolution of a research project to examine the use of reminiscence in nursing homes. Although initially our project sought to examine the efficacy of this practice through a randomized controlled trial, we quickly discovered that additional background was needed to understand how reminiscence was currently being used in nursing homes by both the nurses and the residents. Therefore, our initial investigations sought to understand to what extent reminiscence was currently being used, what purpose it served, and the extent to which nurses and residents found the practice useful and enjoyable. We discovered that while both nurses and residents valued reminiscence, it was a practice which was seldom employed by nurses and engaged in by residents largely in solitude rather than in healthier, socially shared ways. In addition, we found that although residents used reminiscence for some of the functions previously reported in the literature, there were functions unique to this setting and that nurses were using reminiscence in novel ways appropriate to this setting (e.g., to calm anxiety and reorient confused residents). Understanding these novel functions helped pave the way for more additional and ongoing intervention research |
