Summary A veteran farmer's livelihood is threatened by drought but 'the city' constitutes at least an equal threat. The son studying in the city is corrupted and the family is riven by the decadence of city living. The natural threat of drought (represented in naturalistic mode) and the social threat constituted by the corrupt city (in melodramatic mode) are, in effect, opposite sides of the same coin. The independent bush woman, Molly, (see A Girl of the Bush) appears to represent the 'right' balance between nature and culture
