Summary The cyber-attack on JBS USA, the world's largest meat processor, in May and June 2021 had a major impact on the global meat supply chain. The cyber-security breach not only cost the company USD 11 million in ransom, as well as a shutdown to major processing plants and losses of employee wages, but the broader supply chain implications reached as far as disruptions to farmers, transporters, and the whole cold-chain. This case study uses the cyber-attack on JBS USA to highlight the importance of the 'missing middle' of agri-food supply chains in terms of providing safe and nutritious food to high-income societies. Through the lens of transaction cost theory and the knowledge-based view of the firm, students will explore the changing nature of risk in advanced agri-food supply chains. Students will be asked to evaluate this globally significant agri-food supply chain in the context of a new type of risk that has emerged in the twenty-first century. Transaction cost theory and the knowledge-based view of the firm will be applied to demonstrate the importance of the 'middle' of the supply chain when it is threatened by a severe disruption
