Summary This documentary tells the story of the WW II genre. It begins with the British wartime film 'In Which We Serve' and proceeds to take in the groundbreaking neo-realistic 'Rome the Open City' that came to symbolise the wartime Italy and the classically beautiful and yet extremely brutal 'Fires on the Plain', one of the first and most controversial Japanese post-war, war films. The '80s yielded 'Come and See,' a heart-wrenching Russian film about a teenager witnessing German atrocities in Belorussia, and 'Das Boot,' the German film about U-boats and the futility of war. The program concludes with our times and the story of Private Ryan
