Summary |
"I see the events in this sequence of poems as taking place in a hilly district of Southern Iceland, at a time not determined in the past. ... For the most part the Icelandic landscape is sparse, windblown, and difficult: there are many abandoned farms, the interior is ice-locked. Such features suit my interest in the minds of Hredin, Sigrid, Stoli, Skapti, Eyvind and Grimm. My design is not to chronicle, but to pattern chosen fragments from their lives, in order to form a mosaic true to my landscape." --Introduction |
