Summary |
More people than ever are on the move, and moving more quickly than ever before. Migration challenges will be a defining feature of our century, and cities are already at its forefront. Migrants often land in urban centers, since this is where their social support networks and economic opportunities are, and it is here, at the local level, that integration happens. At a time when the discourse on international migration is highly politicized and even toxic, cities can act as policy innovators for national migration plans and narratives. Today's cities are experiencing new migration realities. Some metropoles are confronted with large numbers of permanent migrants or long-term refugees while others primarily host refugees or migrants en route to other destinations. Istanbul in Turkey, Offenbach in Germany, and Tangier in Morocco are three cities that offer a glimpse of how international migration appears in specific regional and national contexts. The experiences of these cities underscore how the role and challenges of cities is a crucial element in the international migration policy debate, especially if we seek to build a system that can better manage migration and mobility in the years ahead |
