Summary |
The Dolphin Coast is a bustling municipality on South Africa's north-eastern coast. Dolphin Coast Outreach (DCO) is the community service arm of the local residents and ratepayers association. This charitable initiative was started by Deon and Megan during the first COVID-19 lockdown, but what started as an emergency frozen soup distribution network has grown to so much more. DCO now receives and distributes clothes, toys, books, infant formula, and more to individuals left destitute by the economic fallout of the pandemic. The organisation has grown rapidly and in all directions, and as a result the daily operations are 'organised chaos'. This is unsustainable for this voluntary organisation. It is time for DCO to be proactive about their supply chain strategy. This case study allows students an immersive view of the daily challenges of a community-based humanitarian organisation. It shows that for such an organisation to remain sustainable, donors' values need to be central to strategy. Four dominant donor profiles, developed in conjunction with DCO, are described in the case study, and students are challenged to develop supply chain strategies that meet the donors' value points |
