Summary This research case study explains the process of studying two most similar systems via a structured, focused, predominantly qualitative case study. It uses comparative historical analysis and in-depth interviews to measure the contextual variables of democratic and migration transitions. This methods case study considers my doctoral research (and beyond) on anti-immigrantism in the Iberian countries. Surprising to many, neither Spain nor Portugal exhibits the anti-immigrant sentiment of their European neighbors. The surprise is in part due to the following: (1) traditionally, migration has been understudied in political science broadly, and (2) Spain and Portugal are often incompletely studied in the European context. Methodologically, any study of the politics of migration is inherently interdisciplinary, which provides a few hurdles. Historically, the two countries have five centuries of very similar political trajectories, which has led many third-country scholars of comparative European politics to consider Spain and Portugal to be practically the same. Many native-born Iberian scholars tend to focus on their own case, ignoring the other completely. Neither approach is helpful. While the Iberian countries underwent democratic and migration transition at roughly the same time and today they are outliers in Europe regarding the politics of immigration, the reason for the lack of anti-immigrant sentiment is not completely shared by Spain and Portugal. This is timely work as immigration remains a hot-button issue in Europe, yet Spain and Portugal remain the least backlash-prone countries on the continent
