Summary Still reeling from the devastating 2006 January bushfires, Victoria's communities and bushland are just beginning to recover. Worst of all, no-one can be sure what February and March, or even April will hold.We may have more firefighting technology than we did during the legendary 1939 fires, but no amount of trucks or water bombing aircraft will ever stop bushfires in South-east Australia. It's all emergency management. To help prevent such fires in the first place, fire itself can be used as a tool. Land managers deliberately burn large areas of the state to help reduce the amount of undergrowth, the fuel for bushfires. But as the prescribed burning begins for the season, an arsonist strikes in Snake Valley creating another serious fire to add to Summer's toll. While arson psychologist Rebekah Doley and fire investigator Geoff Pike piece together the clues to track down the arsonist, the communities affected take stock. While some things will recover by themselves, others will benefit from a helping hand. Just under half of the Grampians National Park is burnt - it won't look the same again in our lifetimes. While most plant and animal populations will eventually recover, it seems we've lost some red gums which are over 500 years old. Across the other side of the state, in Erica, Colleen Wood is spending all her time and money on koala recovery - and the world's first operations to restore koalas' eyesight - so down the track she can release them back into the bush.We come to the end of another season - and in this ever-changing climate it's time to look ahead. It seems we need to learn to live with bushfires. The race is on to adapt to our increasingly fiery future...PRODUCTION DETAILS:Bushfire Summer is a joint venture between the ABC Natural History Unit, the Country Fire Authority, Department of Sustainability and Environment, the Bushfire CRC, ABC News, ABC Local Radio, ABC Emergency Services and ABC Online.
