The case "Building a circular economy with and without plastic. The strategic challenge of SIBUR company" is designed to familiarise university students with the relevant strategic challenges of large petrochemical companies, principles of sustainable business and circular economy (CE), as well as the activities of SIBUR in implementing the principles of CE in its current business model. The case provides an overview of the recent trends in plastic consumption and legislative initiatives launched in different countries related to plastic management; it initiates the discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of plastics production and usage. Further, the case introduces the business model of the large Russian petrochemical company SIBUR and its current activities related to the principles of circular (closed-loop) economy and describes in detail its operational process related to the processing of the by-products of oil extraction into polymeric materials. Students will discuss the issues related to challenges and opportunities of SIBUR strategic disposition, expediency, limitations, and prospects of introducing and developing the principles of CE as a response to the environmental challenges |
