Summary This incredible two-part series follows comic, actor and social commentator Eddie Izzard as he attempts to run a staggering 27 marathons in 27 consecutive days across South Africa to commemorate Nelson Mandela's incarceration. Eddie's marathons give him a chance to tell Mandela's story and the turbulent history of South Africa. Eddie brings his humour and humanity to bear on the most difficult and moving of subjects as he travels the country, stopping at the places that matter most to Mandela. He meets the people whose lives Mandela has touched and reveals the chaotic story of a country that has undergone radical change. Eddie experiences adversity along the way and has to rapidly re-think his plans, producing a moving tribute to Nelson Mandela.Eddie begins his journey in Mandela's birthplace of Mvezo, which seems like the most appropriate location - but from a runner's perspective it couldn't be worse, with its rocky terrain soon taking its toll on his body. As Eddie gingerly picks his way along his course, there's an entertaining mix of Mandela's inspirational life story, excerpts from some stand-up shows, and the marathon man's hilariously tongue- in-cheek narration.
