Summary |
A War of Hope is a remarkable documentary on the events that shook the North Queensland mission of Cape Bedford during World War Two. In 1942, Australia is at war and many troops have been sent to help protect countries throughout Europe and Africa. Yet at home, the Indigenous people of Cape Bedford are propelled into a war of their own when they face accusations of collusion and conspiracy theories around the imminent North Queensland invasion from the Japanese. The conspiracy grows deeper when their German Lutheran missionary, George Schwarz, is interned as an 'enemy alien'.Hopevale elders Roy McIvor, Herbert Mclean and George Rosendale recount the events that changed their lives forever and saw them suffer as prisoners in their own country, spending seven painful years in exile at Woorabinda. Using old war film and historical narration, the scene is set for a story that criss-crosses past and present while examining how Roy McIvor - the boy, the artist, the storyteller - relied on faith and hope to rebuild a prosperous future for himself and his people. A War of Hope is a co-production between Queensland production company Silver Screen Pictures and Indigenous production company Bacon Factory Films, financed with the assistance of Screen Queensland and commissioned by National Indigenous Television |
