Summary |
This documentary gives an overview of transsexualism and transgenderism. Trans-people have been documented for thousands of years in almost every culture. But, today society is still confused and confronted by those who 'cross-dress' or change in gender. Transgender people may or may not be gay or lesbian, but they challenge society's ingrained habit of black/white dichotomous thinking. Attitudes and derogatory remarks from public figures only feed misunderstanding and encourage the marginalisation of transgender communities. Most people accept their gender without thought or questioning, but for some the realisation of difference in self-identity can occur at a very early age. These children know that they are different, but often can not express their feelings and do not know in whom to confide. Presents new research, and challenges current medical beliefs and social transsexual stereotypes through stories and issues covered by several people in the transgender community. The experts give a range of views as they debate the issues relating to gender difference |
