| Summary |
Face Painting with Bill Leak is a six-part series which will take viewers on an amazing journey as renowned cartoonist and portrait painter Bill Leak paints six well-known Australians. Most people know Bill Leak as one of Australia's leading satirists via his day job as The Australian's daily editorial cartoonist. But he is also a highly respected portrait painter, who equally divides his time between ridiculing his subjects mercilessly in his cartoons and immortalising them in oils. Over each episode Bill will build a very personal picture of the subject he's trying to capture on canvas and give us an insight into the detailed process of portraiture - just how difficult it is to 'capture' that essence on canvas. In Face Painting this process is even harder for Bill as his subjects are no longer with us. In this week's episode Bill paints June Salter and faces his toughest test with the portrait of the popular actress/entertainer, as he struggles to capture her iconic personality on canvas. To understand the essence of the character of June Salter he spends time with an emotional John Meillon Jr, her son, who reveals how close he and his mum were. Bill also talks to Gwen Friend, Stuart Wagstaff, Carol Raye and Bruce Venables who share their backstage insights into the real June, a generous lady who loved to laugh. Gwen, sister of artist Donald Friend, shared a house with June for 30 years, consoled her through her divorce from John Meillon, and was June's best mate till she passed away.At the end of the show, Bill will reveal to the TV audience and to John Meillon Jnr and Bruce Venables his portrait of June.
