Summary |
Monumental Vision is an international arts adventure series that follows the adventures of Andrew Rogers, one of Australia's most distinguished contemporary sculptors as he works in remote and exotic locations around the world to create monumental 'earth art' called geoglyphs.Andrew is on a crusade to connect indigenous peoples and places to their past history and their forgotten stories through the creation of ancient symbols and geoglyphs. At each location he works with the elders of the area to identify their important symbols that carry history and heritage in their meaning relative to the culture. In the Gobi Desert, China, stands the Jiayungan Pass the most intact ancient military building preserved from all three passes on the Great Wall. Here Andrew Rogers has been invited to Jia Yu Guan to create three geoglyphs on a site near the western gate of the Great Wall. This will be the largest creation of earth artworks Rogers has ever attempted, and will require over 2000 stonemasons, 6000 pairs of gloves, and over 500 tonnes of rock to complete.Rogers will create three earth artworks including his signature piece, The Rhythms of Life with a span of 200 metres by 200 metres; The Horseman, an ancient image found in the Wei-Jin tomb dating back to the Wei (220-265CE) which serves to illustrate a society strongly influenced by not only traditional Chinese culture but also elements of the nomadic tribes of the region; and finally, The Caveman an ancient nomadic man, from a series of frescoes in the nearby Mogao Caves, which represent recordings of some of the earliest tribes in this region of China |
