Summary |
"The conservation of the historic environment as an important goal of public policy has, over the last thirty years, become a rarely challenged consensus. This book explores beneath and beyond this consensus, looking at how the role of conservation has evolved in the planning system and how the values ascribed to heritage have changed in the process [... the author] charts the evolution of the relationship between conservation and state intervention in the post-war planning system from the high modernist period of the 1940s to the 1960s, through the tumult of the 1970s and into what might be termed the Age of Consensus that arrived in the 1980s. The text examines a number of key arenas; the ways that conserved heritage has become commodified, how much consensus extends to the wider population, and heritage at a global scale - through the medium of the World Heritage Sites. These chapters illustrate the shifting values attached to conservation and heritage especially in terms of the instrumental purposes to which heritage is put and the benefits which are argued to derive from its protection"--Back cover |
